Brickworld – Day 2

Day 2 of Brickworld 2007.

Today was pretty fantastic, as it saw the completion of most, if not all, of the layouts, displays, and other assorted MOCs being displayed by the various LEGO fans here. It’s really kind of hard to say anything in particular about a lot of this stuff, so I’ll just let some more photos speak for themselves – even then, you still lose out on the awe-inspiring scale of many of these creations.

This afternoon was the official Brickworld opening ceremony. We heard from Adam Tucker and Bryan Bonahoom, the two main guys who run the show, as well as from Richard Stollery, a 6-year veteran of the LEGO company in Europe who works in Consumer Services… or Consumer… Experiences. He works there, trust me.

The ceremony was interesting in that it brought to light just how hardcore the people who like each particular theme (Town, Space, 9v trains, Technic, etc.) are. I’ve never felt connected to any particular theme (this is where I get philosophical about LEGO themes), but mostly just like to see cool-looking sets and interesting uses of different parts and elements.

I finally got to meet Tommy Armstrong, the Brick Engraver, who had done the engraving for my Little Guys a few months back. He’s a talented guy. Here’s a photo of one of my Little Guys in among some of his other work.

I also got to have dinner (and generally hang out) with Joshua Leasure and Errol Elumir, both of whom I know through Brickfilms.com. It was great to finally put faces to people whom I’ve only previously interacted with in text-based internet form. It was also fun and interesting to get to talk in such great detail about my LEGO and animation doings to other people who share in the hobby – kind of the vibe of the weekend in general. Josh is, to a great extent, responsible for my being here, so I again have to give him much credit and thanks for that.

Finally, the whole Brickworld group got to shop at the local LEGO store tonight. I’ve never been to one of the LEGO stores before, so it was kind of exciting. We were let in after it closed and given 25% off. I picked up some cool stuff; hopefully it fits in bags for the way home.

Tomorrow is the first day of Brickworld’s open-to-the-public goings-on. I know that’s a lot of hyphenation, but it should be fun nonetheless. Until then…
